Data processing and simulation facility, numerical modelling and interpretation of wave and particle observations

Brief Description of the results obtained in 2008 :

   During 2008 we have continued studies started in preceding year 2007. Our team has published and presented a number of works focused on various processes in collisionless plasmas, namely, detailed investigation of the mirror instability, study of the formation of coherent whistler waves in the foot of strictly perpendicular collisionless shocks, study of constraints imposed on the temperature anisotropy by instabilities generated by this anisotropy. We have also focused on tests of our global semi-kinetic model of the interaction between the solar wind and a small magnetosphere and we worked on studies which qualitatively compare numerical data with Cluster II observations. In the area of the preparation of experiments we have established new contacts with Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Our contacts we have established during our work within ESA PECS program have lead to our successful participation in the announcement of opportunity for ESA's Solar Orbiter mission.
   Our project is also an opportunity for collaboration between an academical institution and Czech industry. Together with SPRINX Systems, a Czech IT company, we have designed and developed high-performance facility specifically configured for our numerical experiments. Our collaboration allowed us to publish a number of key papers in our field and consequently contributed to our invitation into several ESA teams (BepiColombo, Solar Orbiter, Cassini) and NASA teams (MESSENGER, Artemis).
