STATUS: Finished

Ambient Mobile Intelligence for Forest/Agriculture Management - AMI4FOR (www.ami4for.org) is PECS project funded by ESA/ESRIN and coordinated by WIRELESSINFO that tries to find solution for implementation of AMI ideas into real work in forestry and agriculture. From the practical point of view it is a question of collecting data from the field into operational database and implementation of Spatial Data Infrastructure principles into partner systems. The communication among the independent parts of the system and also among whole systems is provided on the base of Open Standards, which are defined by Open Geospatial Consortium and W3C. Geospatial web services establish the foundation stone of the data transfer and their harmonisation is one of the helpful innovations of the research work.

Main objective of the project was defined as establishment of a new concept of Ambient Mobile Intelligence for forest/agriculture management integrated mobile communication, new methods of navigation and integration of spatial information including satellite imaging.

This main goal was specified in detail and split into three specific objectives:

1) The integration of a Spatial Data Infrastructure (integrated satellite imagery) as part of a forestry and agriculture knowledge system on the base of standards and recommendations of OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) with principles of Semantic Web.

2) The design and implementation of a communication and navigation system in a heterogeneous network (terrestrial Internet, GPRS, WIFI, satellite) in combination with current and future navigation systems (GPS, EGNOS, GALILEO).

3) The use of new methods for data mining, modelling and analysis for improving forestry and agriculture (in particular precision farming and vinery) management. The new technologies will support the building of the forestry and agriculture knowledge system (forest management, precision farming, and vineyard management).

The AMI4FOR is based on experiences from previous IT research projects. The idea of main platform is growing from THE VOICE project and the principles of Services Oriented Architecture, Open Agriculture Services and data sharing providing on the base of Open Standards have been developed in the framework of AMI4FOR project.

The outputs from the AMI4FOR are also good background for implementation of these principles into next research projects (currently C@R integrated project), the SW tools can be used for development inside of Living Labs (most of them create a base stone of development in Frascati Living Lab and Czech Living Lab – WIRELESSINFO) and, of course, they can be used directly in involved institutes and companies (Forest Management Institute, MJM).

The individual theme solutions of AMI4FOR project:

1) The principal project theme, which is extended also into the other items and makes up a framework of the integral project, is the spatial data integration within knowledge system that is realized on the basis of Open Standards. This theme is solved as a web portal form, which associates separate components enabling to users finding, using and dissemination of spatial data and services, whereas the priority is to insist on possibility to substitute classic data transmission with public web services (using WMS, WFS, WCS etc.) One of the most important AMI4FOR portal tools is represented by the metadata catalogue Micka, which enables data source finding according to metadata information (but also with metadata taking according to OGC standards). Next tool for setting and other dissemination of map projects is the MapMan, which enables making up of the new map composition by data assembling from internal and external servers available via web services. The interesting portal tools are also implemented WPS (Web Processing Services), which provide complicated analytical functions and calculations on the far servers (for example an analysis on the base of digital landscape model, satellite photos classification etc.), using Open Web Standards as well. The user can use these tools separately or utilize their integrated forms (for example for finding acceptable data sources or use integral service from metadata catalogue Micka).

2) In term of second project theme (solving of communication and navigation system for heterogeneous network) was developed the Special Mobil Unit, which enables data transfer between different communication systems. The Unit contains an own processor and modular integration of major part important communication interface (GPRS, WIFI, Bluetooth, USB, RS-232 etc.) including GPS module for detection of current position. That way it is possible inserting to Unit nearly any external sensor and save data en block or continual on the far server. It is possible the Unit to use also as data transfer shorting between different systems (WIFI-GPRS, different WIFI standards, etc.)

3) The third AMI4FOR project theme is focused on new methods of data collection in a field. For these purposes was developed the system Teredit as a special solution for data transfer from mobile unit to server and back. This solution is realized via form of transactional component system when one part of system is installed on server (Broker) and its objective is to enable project preparation to user, their sharing with other users and data checking before their saving into target database. The second part of system is installed on mobile device (PDA) and provides communication between server and PDA. The own collection or editing can be enable by any applications in common use (tested for geographical data ArcPad, Topol CE, SiteMate, FieldCheck or for non- geographical data the own database editor). Teredit also can use the map compositions for referential data preparation, which were made up on AMI4FOR portal in MapMan.

Developed tools were tested on simple application use cases, which were specified on pilot testbeds – Forest Management Institute, MJM Litovel, ESA/ESRIN Frascati. The components are still modified on the basis of comments from the testbeds. It is supposed to develop the AMI4FOR outputs in future and implement them into next IT systems and project for example GRID.
The AMI4FOR portal is a visible face of Knowledge and Precision Farming Management System. The goal of ami4for portal is to support testing of single components and also end user applications, which are developed inside of ami4for project. The project web is on the address www.ami4for.org, the portal is available on www.ami4for.org/portal.
